It's time to Winterize Your Home
It’s that time of the year again! Winter is coming!! Forecasters predict another cold and snowy winter. What this means for you is work to protect your investment! Below you will find some of our team’s best tips.
Exterior
Fill all the cracks and crevices in your foundation to prevent heat from escaping. Seal hard to reach or oddly shaped gaps with an expandable foam
Cover all exposed pipes with insulation and add hose bib covers on exposed hose faucets. (Your local hardware store will be your best friend)
Replace windows with storm windows (Or Buy the more economical, cheaper version of film insulation to add an extra layer of protection.)
The one we all forget: winterize your sprinkler system!!!
Have your chimney checked and cleaned BEFORE you use it for the first time EACH Fall.
Have your gutters cleaned. (With heavier rainfall and potential snow you want to be sure that the water runs away from your house.)
Trim branches back away from the roof line. (Branches that are looming over the roof can potentially cause damage and act as an entry point for rodents)
Interior
Have your furnace serviced and filters changed.
Insulate all exposed pipes that you can get to.
Are you leaving town for the holidays? Consider turning off your hot water tank to save energy and set your home at a happy temperature around 60 degrees.)
Seal gaps around doors and window frames with weather stripping. (This can prevent cold air from coming into your home.)
Set the rotation of your fan to spin clockwise (fans in the winter time? I know that you’re thinking we are nuts! But this distributes the hot air that’s collected in the top of the room back down to the living area)
Upgrade your thermostat.
You can also call your local energy company and have them come out to your home to do an audit. They will point out any inefficiencies that you may not have noticed.
